I have been donating blood for years now, starting in high school. When I came to college and saw how frequently ImpactLife is present on my campus, I saw an amazing opportunity to help out my community. I donate regularly throughout the school year as well as at the Springfield, IL donor center when I am home for the summer. I love the feeling it leaves me with for the rest of the day. The reminder on my arm that I am making a tangible difference is constant. I love chatting with the phlebotomists and the energy in the room. In a time where we see people in need on a daily basis, the simple act of donating blood makes me feel accomplished. Being surrounded by people who have a desire to also make a difference is gratifying and gives me a lasting feeling of hopefulness. Especially on campus, seeing my peers taking time out of their stressful days to donate and seeing the sign-up sheet fill up with people who walk past and feel inspired.
My Uncle Mike was a frequent blood donor for many years. He was the type of person who helped out in any way he could. He was in the United States Army and then the United States Air Force and served as a Chairman of the Public Safety Committee and Village Board Member for Williamsville, IL. Service was second nature to him and that is such an inspiration to me. When he was diagnosed with cancer and he was the one now needing blood, donating took on a whole new meaning for me. I was now doing it in honor of him in a way. Throughout my life, I have seen family members and friends rely on other people to donate the blood they need as a lifeline. I will never know who my blood is helping directly but I can imagine and that alone is fulfilling enough.
In my sophomore year, I began working with ImpactLife as a Campus Ambassador. When I was approached with the idea of forming a registered student organization at Illinois State University, I took on the responsibility immediately. I love the idea of leaving something behind to continue to thrive after I graduate. But unselfishly, I also know that every single student I reach at ISU is potentially another life saved. Another stranger’s aunts, uncles, or parents are being helped by the donations we get on campus. And so, the Redbirds ImpactLife student club was born. I see the desire to help all around campus. I genuinely believe that young adults have an inherent desire to make a difference. It is all about making your mark on the space you are taking up. I am so inspired by the people I have spoken to at various campus events. I can look to the future and see the Redbirds ImpactLife club’s impact and contribution to the surrounding area.
It is so refreshing to work with the ImpactLife staff and see a genuine desire to make a difference and save lives. The team is eager to help and work with students. From starting the Redbirds ImpactLife club to working with other clubs to planning blood drives, I have always felt supported and valued. I will forever be grateful for the opportunities they have given me. The work we are doing together is so rewarding.
