Events in Florida are highlighting the importance blood providers in the U.S. working together to support patient needs in times of crisis. High winds and heavy rain from Hurricane Debby are affecting blood collection in Florida as the state's primary blood provider, OneBlood, begins its recovery from last week's ransomware attack that slowed blood processing and distribution in the region.
The AABB Interorganizational Task Force on Domestic Disasters and Acts of Terrorism was activated following the ransomware attack last week and ImpactLife has joined blood providers across the U.S. in providing blood components to the region. This week, ImpactLife takes its turn in the rotation of blood providers that are ON CALL once every three weeks for the national Blood Emergency Readiness Corps. BERC is now standing by to deliver additional blood components to the region, as needed.
ImpactLife is able to provide this level of support only as local blood inventories allow because we must first meet commitments to hospitals in our Midwest region. These situations reinforce why it's so important to have a network of community blood centers that provide mutual aid during times of crisis, and it's comforting to know we will have partners across the country who would come to our aid, if ever needed due to a crisis in our region.
To thank donors who give blood at this critical time of year, ImpactLife is providing all presenting donors a voucher to redeem for their choice of an electronic gift card, points to redeem in our Donor Rewards Store, or an equivalent value donation to Make-A-Wish chapters in Illinois, Iowa, Missouri, and Wisconsin. (Details on Donor Promotions at www.bloodcenter.org/now.) To schedule an appointment for blood donation, please call (800) 747-5401, schedule online at [www.bloodcenter.org]www.bloodcenter.org, or via the ImpactLife mobile app (www.bloodcenter.org/app).
