A late start due to icy roads meant Thursday's blood drive at Muscatine High School was reduced down to half of the scheduled time. While 19 people were still able to give blood between 10 a.m. and noon, many donors who planned to support the event were unable to donate. To help support the high school's eligibility to earn the blood center's LifeSavings Grant, ImpactLife is now extending the opportunity to donate for Muscatine High School at its local Donor Center in Muscatine through Feb. 15.

All public and private pre-K - 12 schools within the ImpactLife service region that host a blood drive with ImpactLife can apply to receive a grant amount of $250 – plus, $1 per donation collected.

Students from Muscatine's Key Club recruited blood donors to honor the memory of honor the memory of former Muscatine High School student Micaela Brunson. Micaela’s parents, Brian and Alma, have worked with students at Muscatine High School to organize the blood drive annually after Micaela’s death by suicide in November 2016.

When a late start was called due to icy roads on the day of the blood drive (Thurs., Feb. 6), the blood drive hours were reduced from 10 a.m. to noon, cutting appointment slots in half and resulting in fewer donations than expected. Alex Burkamper, Community Development Associate with ImpactLife, describes the impact of weather-related cancellations on the blood supply.

Burkamper also explained how ImpactLife has extended the opportunity to donate for Muscatine High School to reach its collection goal and become eligible to apply for the blood center's LifeSavings Grant.

While donations are needed from all blood types, this week, ImpactLife has been at a 1- to 2-day supply for type O-negative red blood cells. Type A-positive is also low and platelets are needed from donors of all blood types.
