ImpactLife invites individuals and communities to honor the legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. by giving blood on the annual MLK National Day of Service (Mon., Jan. 20). The National Day of Service, observed on the third Monday of January, is a day to celebrate the civil rights leader’s life and legacy, and donating blood is a vital way to contribute.

To book an appointment for blood donation, call (800) 747-5401, or schedule online at www.bloodcenter.org, or with the ImpactLife mobile app (www.bloodcenter.org/app).

The winter months often see a decline in donations due inclement weather, leading to critical shortages in blood supplies. So far this year, ImpactLife has seen cancellations due to snow and ice that have cost more than 250 donations. The blood center has also provided greatly needed blood components in response to the New Year’s Day attack in New Orleans and to help support the blood supply in southern California, which has been affected by wildfires near Los Angeles.

To thank donors who give blood at this critical time of year, all donors who give blood from Monday, Jan. 20 through Sunday, Jan. 26 will be automatically entered in a drawing for a $1000 gift card. This is in addition to the blood center's existing promotion for an electronic gift card, bonus points for the Donor Rewards Store, or "Good Giving" donation to support food banks, all detailed below and at www.bloodcenter.org/now.

About the MLK National Day of Service

In 1994, Congress designated the Martin Luther King Jr. Federal Holiday as a National Day of Service and charged the Corporation for National and Community Service with leading this effort. Each year, on the third Monday in January, the MLK Day of Service is observed as a “day on, not a day off.”

Dr. King once said, "Life's most persistent and urgent question is, 'What are you doing for others?'" MLK Day of Service is intended to empower individuals, strengthen communities, bridge barriers, create solutions to social problems, and move us closer to Dr. King's vision of a “Beloved Community.”
