Type O and AB Donors
While O Negative is universal for red blood cells, type AB is universal for plasma and can be received by any patient. Universal blood products are often used in emergency trauma situations and with infants or women that are pregnant.
Type O donors are missing the A and B antigens in their blood, which means that they can give to patients that do have A and B antigens. In fact, donors with Type O Negative blood are often considered “universal” because their red blood cells can be transfused to ANY patient. Type AB donors can receive blood from any other ABO group type, but they also are the universal donor for their plasma.
