Turning a Birthday into a Lifesaving Tradition
Sydney's Birthday Challenge: Joining ImpactLife changed my life—it gave me purpose, lifelong friends, and a second family. As my birthday approached, I wanted to celebrate by helping others so I hosted my first blood drive.
A week before the event, my mom (pictured left with Sydney) was diagnosed with breast cancer, making my mission even more personal. Three years later, I’ve helped collect more than 75 red cell donations and two platelet donations. This year was especially meaningful as my mom is now cancer-free!
Thanks to the unwavering support of my coworkers, friends, and community, I’m proud to continue this tradition. Every donation makes a difference, and I’m grateful to be part of something bigger.

The Birthday Challenge is an opportunity for you to have your friends, family, co-workers and basically everyone you know help celebrate your birthday by saving lives. It can be a dedicated blood drive, a party at one of our donor centers, or even just an ongoing commitment to reach a specific number of donations. We’ve designed a Birthday Challenge toolkit, which includes:
- Birthday Challenge “invitations” to invite family and friends to celebrate your birthday challenge
- Facebook event (to be share on ImpactLife’s channels) to promote your birthday challenge
- Social media Graphics (Facebook, Twitter and Instagram) to recognize your donors
- Birthday Challenge stickers to distribute to your donors at they meet the challenge
- Feature on www.bloodcenter.org and across our social channels
